Images of Afghanistan: Carson City soldier shares his experiences
Staff Sgt. Del Dennis of Carson City could have taken a job with his family’s Christian publishing company in Illinois, but instead he became a Marine and then a soldier with the National Guard. For the past four years, Dennis has been serving as a platoon sergeant with the 150th Maintenance Company in Carson City. As a civilian he works in finance for the Nevada State Comptrollers Office.
In April, he volunteered for a one-year tour in Afghanistan with the 1/221 Cavalry out of Las Vegas.
He said due to his finance background he oversees U.S. funds with rebuilding and “winning over the hearts and minds of these very friendly local Afghans.”
He said he finds the work enjoyable.
“I have so much fun here. I love it,” he said. “So far, based on my personal experience, the reception I have encountered has been so very warm. Many Afghani men say that I have a heart of peace and (am) very accepting of them.”
Dennis wants to share the accompanying photos of his service in Afghanistan with Carson City.
“I really enjoy it here and regardless of what the major (news) networks are saying, the morale really is not bad at all. We are trained to adjust and adapt and I can say that we make the best of it, we are family,” he said.
