Judge releases accused fireman pending Vegas trial
LAS VEGAS – A federal judge has released 55-year-old Martin Vohwinkel from custody as the Clark County fire captain awaits trial on charges he tried to coerce a minor into sexual activity.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Lawrence Leavitt on Thursday set a trial for Vohwinkel May 3.
Authorities say Vohwinkel used an online classified ad to seek a casual encounter with a “very young girl” and was arrested after an undercover detective arranged a meeting with him in a parking lot.
Vohwinkel is charged with using a computer to coerce and entice a person under age 18 A federal indictment was handed down Tuesday and Vohwinkel surrendered himself on Wednesday.
Vohwinkel’s lawyer Bill Terry says the case has no true victim. Vohwinkel also faces state charges.
