Kids celebrate their day
Michelle Moriarty, 4, from Minden, was having the time of her life Sunday at the Boys & Girls Club during the first-ever celebration of National KidsDay.
She had a new T-shirt with the Boys & Girls Club logo on it, her cheeks were painted with flowers and hearts and she got to chow down a hot dog and jump in a clown balloon for three hours.
“I am having fun,” she declared, smiling widely.
Diane McCoy, area director for the Western Nevada Boys & Girls Club said the goal of KidsDay was for adults and kids to spend meaningful time together.
The Boys & Girls Club of America, 4-H, KidsPeace and YMCA joined forces to have the first Sunday in August designated KidsDay.
“We have Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, this is for the kids,” McCoy said.
The Carson City site offered drinks, chips and hot dogs, face painting and endless leaps in an inflatable jumper.
Michelle and her sister, Rene, 3, and brother Addison Penfold, 9, showed up with their mom, Shirley Moriarty, shortly after 11 a.m. and stayed until 1:30 p.m.
When McCoy reached the end of the hot dogs she decided it was time to close shop.
The turn-out wasn’t quite what she’d hoped for, but was happy the 27 kids that came had fun.
“I would have liked to have seen more, but I am really pleased with the turn-out we had,” McCoy said. “All the kids that showed up got shirts except for two and it wasn’t too bad for our first event.
“We are looking for a bigger and more successful event next year.”
