Local Legionnaires to commemorate veterans

Local men and women who fought for their country will be honored Memorial Day by members of a local veterans group.

Members of Carson City American Legion High Desert Post 56 will conduct a Final Roll Call ceremony beginning at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Lone Mountain Cemetery.

While everyone is welcome to attend, relatives of veterans whose names are on the memorial kiosk at the cemetery will be able to hear those names recited, said Marco Manor, post commander.

“We also plan to post the colors and have a 21-gun salute,” Manor said.

Former members of each military branch will read names of late veterans from the same branch.

The wooden, three-sided memorial kiosk sits east of the cemetery flagpoles and was completed last year. It contains 125 veterans names now and could hold up to 725 names of those who served in the United States Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard.

Space for names of Merchant Marines is expected soon on the kiosk, he said.

A flagpole standing 20 feet high which flies a Missing-In-Action/Prisoner-of-War flag also has been installed and extends above the kiosk.

Post members also will conduct a memorial ceremony at 9 a.m. at the Dayton Cemetery. They’ll join with members of Dayton’s Veterans of Foreign Wars organization to present this event.

Those who would like to have a veteran remembered on the Lone Mountain cemetery memorial kiosk can contact Manor at 267-4794 or obtain an application at the kiosk. Cost is $25 for each name to be added.

American Legion High Desert Post 56 has about 200 members.
