Man released after time served
A Carson City man who wrote thousands of dollars in bad checks and left a wrecked rental car in California was released yesterday after spending 76 days in Carson City Jail.
Walter L. Hawkins, 36, was sentenced to serve one year suspended with $3,500 restitution to several area businesses and Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
Since his November arrest, Hawkins has been unable to pay for bail.
Judge Michael Griffin gave Hawkins a light sentence relative to the year-long sentence prosecutors were hoping for.
“I think you have a chance to reform your life,” he said. “If you don’t you’ll go to prison and hang out with the boys.”
