Ensign Scott Galloway, the son of Glenn and Heather Galloway of Carson City, graduated on May 22 from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and has been commissioned to his current rank in the United States Navy.

In the most recent class, about 1,400 finalists were selected for admission to the academy out of more than 17,000 applicants. The academy currently has 4,400 students who comprise the Brigade of Midshipmen, and who come from every state in the union.

Galloway, a 2011 graduate of Carson High School, earned a bachelor of science degree with a major in economics. He completed grade school at Oak Lake Community School in Manitoba, Canada, before relocating to Carson City in 2007. He was appointed to the Naval Academy by Sen. Harry Reid.

Galloway served on the Naval Academy Color Guard, whose members carry the colors as representatives of the Academy and the Navy. He earned an internship with the U. S. State Department, and he also studied at the London School of Economics.

The new ensign has chosen to be a Navy pilot and will report in September for aviator training in Pensacola, Fla., following duties as a sailing instructor at the Academy this summer.

Hoffler completes basic military training

Air Force Airman Brad J. Hoffler graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Hoffler, a 2013 graduate of Nevada Union High School in Grass Valley, Calif., is the son of Don Hoffler and Maryanne Hoffler of Nevada City, Calif., and Fred Hoffler of Carson City. He is also the grandson of Joe and Shirley Griggs of Nevada City, Calif., nephew of Robin Hoffler of Angel Fire, N.M., and brother of Jason Hoffler.
