A Carson City mother was arrested Tuesday after social workers allegedly found her home filled with garbage.

Venetia O. Barredo, 36, was booked into the Carson City Jail on suspicion of gross misdemeanor child abuse and neglect.

According to the arrest report, an employee of Child Protective Services called deputies out to Barredo’s Spooner Drive home at about 11 a.m.

“Once inside the residence, I could smell a distinct odor of trash, sour food and animal waste,” wrote Deputy Dan Gomes.

Officers reported seeing numerous bags of trash broken open and spilling out onto the floor.

In the kitchen, there were allegedly clothes piled 2 feet high, dirty dishes and moldy food spilling out of the sink and trash all over the counters, tables and floor.

Two unloaded rifles were allegedly found near ammunition in the hallway on the floor, and the laundry room contained piles of trash “so thick that the door could not be opened far enough to walk inside,” the report states.

Gomes noted the bathroom was also filled with trash, and prescription bottles were within reach of the children, ages 9 and 12.

Barredo’s bedroom allegedly contained “so much garbage that the door could not be opened all the way and you could not see the floor. There was no way to walk into the master bedroom without walking on garbage,” Gomes wrote.

Officers allegedly recovered six guns among dog waste from the bedroom floor.

Gomes wrote that the children’s bedrooms were in similar conditions.

Child Protective Services took the children into state custody.

Barredo is being held on $2,500 bail.
