Nevada Appeal at 150: Dec. 21, 1965: Unprecedented whale lift underway

Shamu, the 2,300-pound female killer whale sold to SeaWorld, a newly-opened San Diego, Calif., aquarium, by the Seattle Public Aquarium for a rumored $75,000, is lifted by a crane from its pen at Rich Cove, Wash., in preparation for a non-stop flight. The flight is expected to take about three hours. Oxygen equipment for the whale’s flight is in the foreground. Shamu, the second female killer whale ever captured, will be wrapped up and continually wet-down during the flight.

This continues the Appeal’s review of news stories and headlines during its Sesquicentennial year.
