Nevada Appeal at 150: Jan. 28, 1954: Washington St., Winnie Lane to be paved soon

Paving of Washington street and Winnie lane will start sometime in the early spring, state and federal highway officials believe.

All rights of way have been obtained and designs for paving are 90 percent complete, according to the state highway department. Plans for the project, relocation of sewer lines and a storm drain, officials said.

Approval for the use of federal funds for the project was given by the Bureau of Public Roads in May 1953, after Washington St. was designated in March 1952.

Federal funds are made available because the two streets will act as feeder streets into a federal aid highways, and therefore it is considered a secondary federal aid project. About 84 percent of the money allotted for the paving will be furnished by the US bureau.

This continues the Appeal’s review of news stories and headlines during its Sesquicentennial year.
