Nevada Appeal at 150: July 29, 1915: American occupation of Haiti begins

The United States’ occupation of Haiti, which lasted until 1934, began on July 28, 1915, when marines landed in Port-au-Prince. President Woodrow Wilson sent the marines to protect the interests of American corporations in Haiti. Wilson expected the troops to stay until “permanent order is restored.”

This continues the Appeal’s review of news stories and headlines during its Sesquicentennial year.
