Nevada Appeal at 150: Nov. 29, 1963: Phone cable tunneled under Carson’s streets

Bell of Nevada contracted recently to tunnel under main arteries in Carson City to avoid digging trenches and disrupting traffic. The workman in the photo is drilling a tunnel 24 inches in diameter and 50 feet long under Stewart Street. More than 4,000 feet of underground cable is being laid to link the central office in Carson City with the $1 million equipment building under construction at Stewart and Caroline streets.
