Gathering set to meet SCBWI members

The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators will host a meet and greet from 3-4:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Douglas County Public Library, 1625 Library Lane, Minden.

The event is free and open to Northern Nevadans in the Carson City, Lake Tahoe, and Carson Valley areas. Attendees will have a chance to meet SCBWI members, get information about SCBWI, and ask questions about children’s writing and illustrating.

“If you have a manuscript or portfolio you want to share or have critiqued, bring it along,” said Northern Nevada Coordinator Jenny MacKay.

Local author, lawyer publishes sixth book

Day Williams, a lawyer in Carson City, has published his sixth book, “We the People.”

“We the People” is an American book with hundreds of Presidential quotations and many American milestone documents. This is a fundamental compendium of American law and lore, principles and practice.

Teach an adult to read

Carson City Literacy Volunteers needs tutors to teach dyslexic and ESL learners. Training for new tutors will be:

6-9 p.m. Sept. 15

6-9 p.m. Sept. 16

9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sept. 18

6-9 p.m. Sept. 22

6-9 p.m. Sept. 23

All sessions will be held at the Nevada State Library and Archives, 100 N. Stewart St. Tutors do not go into students’ homes to tutor.

Training gives people the tools and confidence needed to tutor without prior teaching experience. Cost is $25 or scholarships are available.

Harvest Book Sale planned at the library

The Friends of the Carson City Library will offer a Harvest Book Sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 10 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 11 at the library, 900 N. Roop St. in Carson City.

Thousands of books will be featured including fiction and nonfiction, adult and children, hardcover and paperback.
