Nevada man added to US EPA fugitive website
LAS VEGAS (AP) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has added a Nevada man to its fugitive website for failing to surrender to law enforcement after being indicted for alleged violations of the Clean Air Act.
The agency says Joseph DeMatteo of Clark County was indicted by a federal grand jury Jan. 6. The Nevada-certified emissions tester was among 10 who were indicted on one felony count of falsifying vehicle emissions test reports in Las Vegas between November 2007 and May 2009.
DeMatteo and the other defendants allegedly engaged in the “clean scanning” of vehicles. The practice involves using a vehicle that will pass the emissions test in place of the one that would not pass.
A vehicle inspection report showing the allegedly falsified data would then be issued for from $10 to $100 more than the usual emissions testing fee.
