All are welcome to attend the Nevada National Guard’s 17th annual Flag Day and Army Birthday celebration at 10 a.m. on June 12 at the Legislative Grounds, 401 S. Carson St.

This year’s celebration will feature keynote speaker Attorney General Adam Laxalt and McAvoy Lane, “The Ghost of Mark Twain,” as the master of ceremonies. The event is free and includes a historical flag display, an honor guard and birthday cake marking the Army’s 240th birthday.

Col. Zachary Doser, who will attain the rank of brigadier general this summer, will give the Army birthday speech. The U.S. Army is actually two years older than the U.S. Flag. A resolution of the Continental Congress authorized 10 companies of riflemen on June 14, 1775, giving birth to the U.S. Army. Two years later, the Continental Congress passed the first Flag Act and adopted the stars-and-stripes design as our nation’s flag. In 1949, President Harry S. Truman signed an act of Congress designating June 14 as National Flag Day.
