Nobody Asked Us, But … Saying goodbye to two of Carson’s finest

Carolyn Tate & Maizie Harris Jesse
For the Nevada Appeal

Hoe you all survived Nevada Day, and had a great Halloween. Now, if you’re religious, today is All-Saint’s Day and tomorrow is All-Soul’s (or the Day of the Dead, if you’re Hispanic). Either day is a good day to pray for all of us.

Carson City has lost two very significant people this week … Pam Crowell, who was a lovely person and ever so active in Democratic circles; and Jack C. Davis, who was so instrumental in getting our community college in Carson City up and going. The WNC Observatory is named for him, and, if you didn’t know, he also was on the board of the Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum, one of his many contributions. We will miss them both, and extend our deepest sympathy to their families.

Under “Anticipated News:” WNC is opening “The King and I” at the Community Center at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, for an extended run. Call 445-4249 for information and reservations. It will be beautiful!

The BAC also is opening “Dracula, the Musical,” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6 (883-1976), for a three weekend run. It will be a fun evening.

Under “Good News:” Derrick Kepler is our city’s latest deputy sheriff (even though he’s assigned to the jail as he starts his career … tch, tch, D … were you a bad boy? The devil made Maizie say that). Congratulations, and great success. The Simons family also is to be congratulated. They have been nominated by Sen. John Ensign for the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute’s Angels in Adoption Program … and justly so … they have, over the years, adopted 18 children, many with special needs. They are indeed angels, and we hope they win.

Bethlehem Lutheran Church is hosting a Holiday Bazaar from

9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 11 in its school gym, 1837 N. Mountain St. There will be crafts, a bake sale, silent auction and fun … and it’ll be time to start stocking up for Christmas. For additional information, call 246-9343 or 841-2492. St. Teresa’s will be holding a beer and wine tasting at the Silver Oak Golf Club on the same day at 5 p.m. Cost is $55 per person, or $100 per couple. It will benefit the school (882-1968). And a belated happy birthday to Kurt at Charter Communications.

Mollie Sanders (and the Internet) strikes again: “A blond hears that milk baths would make her beautiful, so she leaves a note for the milkman to deliver 25 gallons of milk. The milkman reads the note and thinks she probably means 2.5 gallons of milk, so he rings the doorbell to clarify the situation. ‘No,’ she says. ‘I need 25 gallons so that I can take a bath and be beautiful.’ ‘Do you want pasteurized?’ he asked. ‘No,’ she replies, ‘just up to my chest. I can splash it on my eyes.'”

M took the Big C for a ride on the V&T Railway last Saturday for her birthday (which was in September, but we couldn’t get reservations until Oct. 24), then went to dinner in V.C. at Cafe del Rio. It was a great ride (Terry Ward went with us) and a great dinner. The Shaws serve the same wonderful food as they did when they were in Carson City. Believe us, it’s worth a trip up there to have dinner. The train is very classy … each car has a bathroom, a car attendant named Fred (great guy), and a great “hugger” (Jerry Barth). We got the full treatment. If you haven’t taken the trip, consider making reservations with the Chamber of Commerce for May, 2010. It’s grrrrrreat!

Another Census reminder. You do not have to give them your Social Security number, credit card, banking or financial information … they only want to know how many people are living at your address. Period. Legitimate Census takers will have an ID badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag and a confidentiality notice. You should ask for these identifiers, and do not need to let them into your home when you answer the questions. They also will not share this information with the INS or IRS, and they will not e-mail you for any reason.

Go Senators (it’s a CHS thing)!
