Three certified as green builders

The Certified Green Professional Course offered by the Builders Association of Western Nevada in conjunction with the National Association of Home Builders’ University of Housing has been completed by three local BAWN Members.

Jeff Miller of Advanced Design and Construction, Mark Turner of Black Pine Construction and Matt Green of Green Quality Construction have earned their designation. The CGP course provides a solid background in green building methods and the tools to reach consumers and to provide market-driven green building solutions to the home building industry.

Ribbon cuttings

Three Carson-area businesses are holding grand opening events in the next two weeks. Here’s the rundown:

– Feb. 19: Able Bodies Fitness, 55 East Winnie Lane, 5:15 p.m.

– Feb. 23: Essential Kneads Wellness Spa, 377 S. Nevada St., 5:15 p.m.

– Feb. 26: It’s All About Me Fine Clothing, 3790 Highway 395, 5:15 p.m.

All events feature refreshments and a chance to explore Carson’s newest businesses.

Carson Chamber mixer Feb. 18

The Carson City Chamber of Commerce monthly mixer will be held at Carson Jeep Nissan, 3390 S. Carson St. on Feb. 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. The event will feature food, drinks and business networking opportunities.

Young professionals speed networking

Do you have young business professionals working for you? If they are between the ages of 21-40, sign them up to be a part of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce’s Young Business Professionals. The group meets monthly. This month they will be at the Firkin & Fox at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 24.

Hearn recognized at builders show

The Builders Association of Western Nevada announced that Julie Hearn of Southwest Gas and president of the BAWN Women’s Council accepted a first place award from Pam Weaver, national chair of the NAHB Women’s Council at the International Builders Show in Las Vegas.

Julie and her fellow council members were recognized for 2008 outstanding member benefits/services. In addition to the award, the local council received a $500 donation to their Women in Business Scholarship Fund from NAHB.

Wine, Women & Chocolate March 5

The Builders Association of Western Nevada Women’s Council annual membership drive event “Wine, Women and Chocolate” will be at 5:30 p.m. March 5 at the BAWN office, 806 Randell Drive, Carson City.

Chili’s still open in north Douglas

Although the Chili’s restaurant on College Parkway closed this week, the other Chili’s on Topsy Lane in northern Douglas County is still open, with no plans to close.

This was the first Chili’s to move to the Carson area.

Bibee & Associates wins award

Bibee & Associates Insurance of Carson City was recently named Nevada Insurance Agency of the Year by the Nevada Capital Insurance Company. The award is presented to the agency that has shown outstanding achievement in sales and service to their clients. This is the second time Bibee has won the award.

Platinum staff attend symposium

Nine members of the Platinum Salon & Day Spa staff recently attended the 2009 Redken Symposium at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. Lori Hadlock, Cadence Mefford, Krista Anderson, Georgine Jones, Robin Jackson, Graciela Ramirez, Ireli Montes, Kourtney Singleton and Tiffany Nelson spent three days learning about the latest hair trends and creative color techniques.

Free tax preparation for seniors offered

AARP offers free tax preparation for seniors. Taxpayers wanting their taxes prepared and electronically filed for free do not have to be AARP members or any specific minimum age. Now and through April 15 representatives will be at the Douglas County Library, 1625 Library Lane, Minden, 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m., Tuesdays, and Douglas County Senior Center, 2300 Meadow Lane, Gardnerville, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Thursdays.
