Obituary for Harriet L. Crowell

A memorial service for Harriet L. Crowell, 91, a Carson City resident for the past 50 years, will be at 11 a.m. Jan. 25, at FitzHenry’s Funeral Home.

Mrs. Crowell died Jan. 16, 2003. She was born Nov. 20, 1911, in Neligh, Neb., to John Wesley and Laura Alice Frady Lamson.

She graduated from Neligh High School at the age of 16 and took post-graduate courses, receiving a teaching certificate. She taught all eight grades in two rural schools for the next four years. She graduated from Wayne State Teachers’ College with a bachelor of fine arts degree in English and voice. In 1938, she attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City.

In 1939, she traveled by train to Tonopah to accept a teaching position paying $140 a month. She taught third grade as well as music in all grades of the Tonopah school system.

She met William. J. Crowell, a local attorney, in Tonopah. They were married June 26, 1940, in Neligh. They lived in Tonopah for 15 years and moved to Carson City in 1953.

Mrs. Crowell was a soloist at the Presbyterian Church, a member of OES, Past Patrons and Matrons, Beta Sigma Phi and PEO Sisterhood. She served as president of these organizations over the years.

She was preceded in death by her husband July 18, 1988.

Among her survivors are: son and daughter-in-law William J. Jr. and Cathy Bax Crowell, and his daughter Meghan L. Crowell; and son and daughter-in-law Robert L. and Susan Asbury Crowell and their children Brad, Caroline, David and Todd.

FitzHenry’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A celebration of her life will follow the Jan. 25 memorial service.
