Operation Scarecrow to protect children again on Halloween

Nevada Appeal staff report

Law enforcement officials from several agencies are conducting their annual program to make sure sex offenders don’t target children on Halloween.

Operation Scarecrow includes Nevada’s Parole and Probation officers, the U.S. Marshal’s Service Fugitive Task Force and the Regional Sex Offender Notification Unit.

A spokesman said the goal is to ensure there’s no contact between supervised offenders and children by providing enhanced community supervision to high risk sex offenders.

Supervised sex offenders are not permitted to participate in any activity that could lure children to or near their residences. They are barred from having home parties or distributing candy to children on Halloween.

This week preceding Halloween, officers are making contact with both supervised and unsupervised offenders to verify their compliance with registration and other requirements.
