120 YEARS AGO

Yesterday morning, two barbers living within a half mile of the Morton House made an agreement not to articulate a word until 8 o’clock in the evening, with each failure costing a fine of 25 cents. By that time, they both had fines of nearly $600. Hereafter, let those who say that a woman’s tongue is hung on a pivot hold their peace.

100 YEARS AGO

Next attraction at the opera house will be amateurs in “Fanchon the Cricket.” A number of new faces will be seen, and every detail of the play is receiving strict attention.

70 YEARS AGO

In the bloodiest weekend in this state in the past four years, auto crashes took the lives of five Nevada people, while another was allegedly murdered. Returning from basketball in Ely, four McGill High School students lost their lives when their car crashed into that of Jerry Mahoney, McGill merchant. Four others were seriously injured, and little hope is held out. Mahoney had a broken leg. Dr. McLeod of Tonopah was killed in another crash.

50 YEARS AGO

The state Transportation Department is embarking on an experiment to get more wear out of Nevada roads. On 23 miles east of Fernley, it is asking trucks to switch from right to left lanes.

A benefit sock hop for playground equipment for the new Mark Twain Elementary School is set Sunday with Papa Clutch and the Shifters.
