The guards at the prison saw a man standing along the roof of the prison hiding behind the projections of the wall … a shot was fired and he rose and ran like a cat to the manhole. When he reached the wall he cast aside his shoes, made a leap over the wall and crossed the road headed for Shaw’s hot springs. He was recognized as Matheney, a murderer serving a life sentence. He had cut the iron plate in the ceiling of the cell … Later that night he came to the house of a rancher named Smith near Steamboat Springs in his stocking feet and asked for shelter. He was recognized as a convict by his striped suit, and the rancher told him it was his duty to return him to prison. Matheney made no objection and was brought up on the morning train.

Mrs. Stanton was before Justice Hawthorne charged with disturbing the peace and quiet. Mr. Alphabetical Lynch who lives in the neighborhood testified that the accused applied “offensive epitaphs” to Mrs. Kelley. Mrs. Stanton said she did not understand the nature of an oath whereupon Mrs. Kelley said that her language was such that she supposed she knew nothing but oaths. The accused was adjudged guilty …
