A thaw. The weather hereabouts is so capricious and unreliable as a California Legislature. On Thursday night the temperature fell to four degrees below zero, and so much had the weather moderated during the night before last, that at an early hour yesterday morning the snow had all gone from our streets and from the house tops and firm frozen ground had no place to mud.

130 years ago

(Correco’s pig; continued from Thursday.) Mr. McLoughlin grabbed a trusty six shooter and began to empty the chambers into the pig. By this time the intruder had upset the swill barrel and was running a lightning drift into it, a circumstance which caused him to take no notice of the bombardment in his rear. After six shots McLoughlin discarded his gun for the more effective and trustworthy piece of scantling and basted the pig a half dozen times (continued on Saturday).

The Ten Commandments for Christmas giving (continued from Thursday). 9. Thou shalt not gush over thy gifts. Thou shalt show thy gratitude in more sincere ways. 10. Thou shalt, at the earliest opportunity, give written and verbal thanks for such kindness as thy friends may have bestowed upon thee at Christmas.

70 years ago

Earth slides in the 43-foot crater added new perils to the task of two young engineers toiling in the dank hole to neutralize a giant Nazi bomb, buried deep in the Croydon residential district of England. The bomb was dropped some five years ago.

50 years ago

(Photo caption) Gov. Grant Sawyer today in welcoming members of the special committee meeting for the purpose of establishing a State Department of Corrections, asked them to come up with some sort of a program which would be presented at the next session of the legislature.

30 years ago

The man who bashed in windows at the state Legislative Building Sept. 18 and at the State Capitol last year received what he asked for today: a 10-year prison term.
