The rancher, who is a friend to the birds and who takes a wise and practical view of their usefulness, comes to us protesting against the practice, all too prevalent, of certain pot-hunters who are continually killing blackbirds. Says he: “These birds live on insects and grain. We have not birds enough now, for as one can see, for the looking every cabbage leaf in this valley is perforated with insects. So, I suggest that you make an appeal to the hunters to leave the blackbirds and meadow larks alone.”

To give an idea of how political rumors go, the following is related as fact. A man recently was overheard to tell another that it was the superintendent of the Mint who originated the Crawford plan of holding primaries, and went away fishing on election day to avoid the storm of public disapproval.

At a meeting of the Churchill County Chamber of Commerce, members endorsed the Newlands-Broussard River Regulation bill to appropriate $60,000,000 a year for ten years to promote irrigation.
