Fun for the youngsters. Sheriff Smith got out his big sleigh yesterday and with a capacious cutter for a “back action” loaded up the youngsters of Miss Clapp’s and Lawlor’s schools and gave them a ride behind a stylish team of four handsome horses. Unaware that the public school was not in session, his neglect to call all the scholars in session. They may be certain of a sleigh ride the very next time that there is snow enough to make good sledding.

130 years ago

(On the Mint question) The editorial in yesterday’s Appeal seems to have aroused the town. The statement that only two officials were at the meeting was in error, and we knew it at the time of writing it. It had the desired effect. We never enjoyed anything more than yesterday morning when we came down the street and met a number of men almost mad enough to fight. The abuse heaped upon the Appeal yesterday by parties hit by the article has had the fine effect of asking the town up (continued tomorrow).

100 years ago

This year the Christmas tree for the young people of the Catholic Sunday school will be held at the Leisure Hour Club hall on Monday evening, Dec. 27. The festival will be entirely free, the generosity of the Knights of Columbus and friends.

70 years ago

Tires come off the ration list Jan. 1. But it may still be some time before there’ll be enough to allow motorists to get a complete new set.

50 years ago

Any local residents who will be unable to afford the traditional Christmas dinner are invited to be guests of the Carson City Nugget that day. Anyone able to accept the Nugget’s Yuletide hospitality is to go to the coffee shop, order dinner and hand the check to the cashier with the remark, “I’m a guest today.”

30 years ago

The Christmas spirit is in evidence in Carson City, thanks to the agencies that will provide food or emergency shelter on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
