Died: Lottie M., daughter of George and Mary C. Fleming, aged six years. It has been but a few days since Mr. and Mrs. Fleming followed their elder daughter to the grave. That direful, dreaded scourge, the scarlet fever, was the cause.

Discovery: Joe Muller, a guard at the prison, went to hunt an escaped life termer and found him hidden in the trunk of a petrified mastodon. It is Mr. Consindine’s idea to place the mastodons around as ornaments and has already stationed half a dozen around the yard. When an eastern visitor comes to the prison and sees half a heard of gigantic mastodons on guard, he is impressed. The animals are worth $100,000 each (Churchill Standard).
