Petition drive starts in Fallon over water

FALLON – A couple of Churchill County residents have launched a petition drive designed to ensure the Fallon area gets as much water as possible.

Bill Candee and Jamie Mills began circulating separate petitions Friday with a goal of gathering 20,000 signatures.

One of the petitions asks the U.S. District Court to direct the Interior Department, Bureau of Reclamation and Truckee Carson Irrigation District to expedite repairs to the Truckee Canal.

The canal, which takes water from the Truckee River near Fernley to the Fallon area, broke on Jan. 5, 2008 and forced at least 1,500 people to evacuate their homes.

The other petition asks the federal government to erase all provisions of the Truckee River Operating Agreement that alter the historical distribution of water from the Truckee to the Fallon area.
