Reno broadcaster killed in hit and run

KTVNReno sports broadcaster JK Metzker, 41, died today of injuries sustained in a hit-and-run accident last night.

Reno sportscaster JK Metzker with Channel 2 died this afternoon from injuries sustained in a hit-and-run accident in Reno last night.

According to a release from KTVN News Director Jason Pasco, Metzker was struck by a vehicle as he crossed Virginia Street after leaving a game at the University, Nevada Reno just before midnight.

The vehicle reportedly fled the scene but witnesses were able to provide a description of the vehicle and it was located shortly thereafter by a deputy with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, according to a Reno Police Department release.

Ryan Joseph Rhea, 23, of Reno, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run causing death.

“Alcohol does appear to be a factor in this case,” the RPD release states.

 Metzker, 41, died just before 1:30 p.m. today.

KTVN-TV General Manager Lawson Fox said, “We are grief struck.  JK’s commitment to his family was an example to every father and husband.  His family is a delight.  And JK’s humor and storytelling ability were extraordinary.  He is deeply missed.”


Channel 2 News Director Jason Pasco said, ‘I can’t begin to describe the shock and sadness we are feeling today in the Channel 2 Newsroom.  This is such a tremendous loss for us both professionally and personally, but pales in comparison to the loss it is to his family.”
