Reno officials defend area’s water after ranking
RENO, Nev. (AP) – Reno officials are disputing an environmental group’s report that ranks the area’s tap water fifth-worst in the nation.
Truckee Meadows Water Authority executives say its water is some of the best. The authority’s water quality chief says the water is safe and of the highest quality.
The Washington, D.C.-based Environmental Working Group says it based its report on an analysis of 20 million water quality tests performed by utilities between 2004 and 2009.
The Truckee Meadows Water Authority serves about 93,000 homes and businesses. It draws 85 percent of its water from the Truckee River. It taps groundwater wells as backup during the peak summer demand.
