Reno student suspended over items in backpack
RENO (AP) – A Reno middle school student has been suspended after officials say they found items in his backpack that could be used to create an explosion.
Officials say the 12-year-old Vaughn Middle School student had common household items in his backpack, not explosives or gunpowder.
Washoe County School District spokesman Steve Mulvenon would not discuss the specific items found in the backpack because of concern others might copy him.
The student was taken into custody Thursday on suspicion of possessing an explosive or incendiary device in a public area.
The school district says the child had no intent to harm anyone.
