River cleanup set for October

BRAD HORN/Nevada Appeal Ron Bowman, co-chairman of the Carson City Kiwanis Club, stands in the remains of a trailer that was torched near the Carson River on Thursday. The Kiwanis will hold its 20th annual river cleanup Oct. 8.

The junk lining Carson City’s river – everything from encyclopedias to automobiles – will be carted away Oct. 8 during the Carson City Kiwanis Club’s Carson River Cleanup.

“Look at this. It’s a lovely place,” said co-chairman Ron Bowman on Thursday, sweeping his hand toward the rushing water. “If you let some people take it over from you and trash it, then you lose part of your community.”

The cleanup began 20 years ago when three Kiwanians went to the river to fish one Saturday and came back in disgust from the trash, Bowman said. The event is volunteer powered and groups such as the Boy and Girl scouts, Key Club, Naval Junior ROTC and Friends of the Carson River are vital in its success.

But anyone is invited to join. In years past about 300 volunteers came out to help.

Cleanup will visit several areas in the Carson River Canyon. Bowman said it will entail clearing brush, doing beaver protection for the trees and most importantly picking up the old furniture, washing machines, beer cans, clothing and general all-around trash that litters the banks, he said.

Southwest Gas has offered the use of heavy equipment and Cinderlite will be sending a dump truck and driver.
