Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels: Pilot makes aviation dreams come true
The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.SILVER DOLLAR: To the Ageless Aviation Dreams program at the Carson City Airport. The nonprofit foundation takes seniors for airplane rides whether they have small aircraft flight experience or not. The organization was founded by Dayton’s Darryl Fisher, who grew up around planes. He offered his first flight to a fellow named Hugh Newton, who “was just beside himself” with joy at the opportunity in Oxford, Miss. Fisher said it was a joy for him, as well.“It was just such a rich experience,” Fisher said. He added that he told his wife: “That was so cool; we need to figure out a way to do this more.”SILVER DOLLAR: To Mike and Denise Mazzaferri for stepping up and buying the two golf courses that make up the Genoa Lakes Golf Resort. The sale, which is expected to be final by the end of the month, will mean that the courses continue to operate. Mario Antoci, who has owned both courses since 2005, had said the north course would close if a buyer wasn’t found by Oct. 1.Keeping these courses as part of the Divine 9 is important for tourism in Northern Nevada.
