Special concert offered by Strings in the Schools

Strings in the Schools, Carson City Symphony’s after-school program, presents, “This is Not a Christmas Concert” at 7 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Plaza Conference Center, 211 E. Ninth St.

About 80 string players, including Carson City public-, private-, and home-schooled students, and students from surrounding areas, will perform several pieces, from classics to folk and fiddle tunes. Admission is free.

The concert, directed by Carson City Symphony’s Education Director, Sue Jesch, features beginning violins in grades two to five; a youth string orchestra for all ages, including adult mentors; and Strazz, the advanced jazz and fiddle ensemble. A special guest group, the Carson High Percussion Ensemble, also will perform.

An original work of art, “Latent Storm” by Deana Hoover, will be on display. Concertgoers can buy tickets for a chance to win the painting. Proceeds benefit the Carson City Symphony’s educational and artistic programs, including Strings in the Schools. The winner will be announced at the “Holiday Treat” concert Dec. 12 at the Carson City Community Center. Winner need not be present.
