Suspect arrested in Nye County
A Las Vegas man accused of shooting his wife early Saturday morning has been arrested in Nye County.
Michael Newcastle, 35, was taken into custody by Nye County Sheriff’s deputies just after 8 p.m. Saturday night on Highway 95, north of Beatty.
The 2006 Chrysler 300 he was driving was spotted by an Esmeralda County Sheriff’s Deputy who followed the vehicle until he was able to get assistance from the Nevada Highway Patrol and Nye County deputies.
At approximately 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Lyon County deputies responded to a report of shots fired and a person down in the 3000 block of Farm District Road.
Shelby Joanette, 36, was found with two gun shot wounds to the head. She was taken by Care Flight helicopter to an area hospital.
Witnesses provided a description of a car similar to Newcastle’s in the area and Lyon County deputies broadcast an attempt to locate on that vehicle on Saturday afternoon.
Newcastle and Joanette had been married for several years and were in the process of getting a divorce, according to Lyon County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Rob Hall.
Joanette had recently moved from Las Vegas to her parents’ home in Fernley.
Lyon County detectives were in Beatty, located 120 miles northwest of Las Vegas, processing the vehicle and interviewing Newcastle on Sunday. He is expected to be transferred to Lyon County in the next several days.
Newcastle was arrested on one count of attempted murder. Joanette’s condition was unavailable at press time.
