Tribe recruiting AmeriCorps Promise workers
The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California is looking for staff members to build a program providing services to children.
The federal AmeriCorps Promise Fellowship program will fund five positions for 10 months to provide services in five different areas.
The goals of the program are to develop relationships with caring adults, safe places with structured activities during non-school hours, a “healthy start,” marketable skills and an opportunity to “give back through community service.”
Those selected for the program will create after-school activities for tribal youth. One volunteer will be assigned to each of the four tribal reservation communities at Dresslerville in Douglas County, Carson, Stewart in Carson City and Woodfords in Alpine County, California. The fifth will work at the Washoe language immersion school.
The pay for the program is a $520 living allowance every two weeks plus an educational award of $4,725 for college expenses at the end of the program. Qualifications include a year of leadership experience and a high school diploma or GED, driver’s license and at least 18 years of age. The applicants must have a year’s work experience and no felony convictions.
