Trustee position open
Members of the Carson City School Board are looking for a new representative from the northeastern part of town after the resignation of Trustee Julie Butler.
Butler, whose resignation became official Feb. 17, gave up her District 2 seat in order to spend more time with her family. Her last board meeting was Jan. 11.
“We’re really going to miss her,” said Superintendent Jim Parry. “She really has a great way of seeing the whole picture and understanding the role of a board member.”
He said he hopes that once her children have grown she will run for the school board.
Butler was appointed to the board in September of 1998 to complete the term of Laurie Diefenbach.
The position is open to those living in District 2, which encompasses much of the northeast portion of Carson City.
The term will run through the end of the calendar year, and Parry said he hopes the appointee would then run for election.
Residents living within the district who wish to apply must submit a letter of interest and a resume by March 24.
The board plans to interview eligible candidates at the March 28 school board meeting. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center.
The exact boundaries of the district can be verified at the Clerk-Recorder’s Office.
Butler, a state employee, is the mother of two small children. She is a five-year resident of Carson City and applied for the open position almost two years ago.
“Rather than be an armchair critic, I thought why not get involved,” she said during the interview process.
She told the board that her goal was to increase the quality of education in the school district by preparing every student to be successful upon graduation whether by attending college or working.
Trustee Bob Crowell in his motion to appoint Butler, said, “She presented a well-rounded approach. “
Resumes should be sent to:
