Vallejo man in hospital after being shot by police
VALLEJO, Calif (AP) – Police say a 37-year-old Vallejo man is hospitalized in stable condition after being shot by an officer.
Vallejo police say Dennis James Merrida was shot a little after 3 p.m. Wednesday as officers responded to a report of an armed robbery.
Vallejo police Lt. Abel Tenorio says when officers came in contact with Merrida, he attempted to flee on foot. Merrida was shot when police say he turned toward a pursuing officer and raised a handgun he was carrying.
Merrida was taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery for a single gunshot wound.
A second person was detained as part of the investigation.
Police say before the incident, Merrida was wanted for parole violation from a prior robbery conviction.
As part of standard procedure, the officer who opened fire is being placed on paid administrative leave, pending an investigation by the Vallejo Police Department and the Solano County District Attorney’s Office.
