Wind likely a zephyr, meteorologist says

Nevada Appeal Staff Report

An odd gust of wind which had residents on Robinson Street scratching their heads Saturday morning was likely what is commonly known as a Washoe zephyr, said Dawn Fishler, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Reno.

“Sometimes those zephyrs can kick in and buildings will funnel the wind so that it whips about 30 mph,” Fishler said, “but that’s the most logical explanation I can come up with.”

A reader called to say that the wind gust she witnessed blasted down from the west, then from east to west, then back again, shaking tree branches and ripping flowers from their stems.
