Holiday travelers over the Sierra could run into some slushy driving conditions.

The National Weather Service posted a winter weather advisory for the Lake Tahoe region beginning at noon Friday and running through midnight.

Forecasters say up to 3 inches is possible above 5,500 feet Friday, with another 7 inches possible overnight at the higher elevations. The storm will be accompanied by blustery wind gusting to 80 mph over the ridgetops.

In the Carson City area, a winter weather advisory was posted from 4 p.m. Friday until 4 a.m. today.

The weather service said precipitation will start out as rain on the valley floors but change to snow overnight, with anywhere from 1 to 5 inches possible, depending on location.

Today brings a 50 percent chance of snow showers, mainly before 10 a.m. The high is expected to be near 40 degrees, with a north wind around 10 mph.

Sunny days should return Sunday and remain through Thursday, with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s.
