WNC invites space grant scholarship applicants

Western Nevada College is offering two $1,250 scholarships to students with an interest in the nation’s space program, for the spring 2010 semester that begins Jan. 25. Applications are due Dec. 15 for the NASA/WNC Space Grant scholarship.

Art galleries offerings

The college’s new set of exhibitions begins Nov. 30 and will run through Jan. 7. Galleries will be closed between Christmas Eve and New Year.

The Main Gallery in the Bristlecone Building will feature Galen Brown, a northern Nevada artist whose “Red, Blue and Other Colors,” is a contemporary and unusual exhibit for this area. Brown will teach a fine arts portfolio class during spring semester.

In the Atrium Gallery, former WNC student Claudia Rios will show her new work, a collection of close-up concert photos. A graduate of the college’s graphic communications program, Rios is completing a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and graphics at the University of California, Berkeley.

The College Gallery will host an exhibition from Professor Jayna Conkey’s advanced digital photography class. WNC art galleries are located in the Bristlecone Building on the campus at West College Parkway. All exhibits are free and may be viewed during normal business hours.

Film series ends in Morocco on Dec. 4

Western winds up its global film festival with the Moroccan offering, “What a Wonderful World,” at

7 p.m. Dec. 4. The stylish film is a new vision of an old culture with a theme that’s for mature audiences.

All films show at Marlette Hall on the Carson City campus. Admission is $3. For information call 445-3222.

Local residents help technical programs

Connie Corky of Dayton has donated a 1998 Buick Century to the WNC Automotive Technology program.

Another important donation has come to the college from Teresa Ohl of Capitol City Loans who donated a Miller stick welder to the Welding Technology program. The donations are a great
