The University of Nevada women showed strength on the track and in field events to capture top honors at their own Silver State Invitational indoor meet held Saturday at the Reno Livestock Events Center.

Maranda Brownson won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.31 seconds, won the high jump with a clearance of 5-feet, 6-inches and added a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 17-11 to lead the Wolf Pack during the first in a series of invitationals they will host over the next three weekends.

Nevada scored 256 points to win the women’s team title, well ahead of Western Athletic Conference rival Fresno State in the runner-up spot with 115.5 points.

The Wolf Pack also swept the top five places in the mile run, led by Jenna Huber in 5:06.91. Freshman Monica Buccambuso, a Douglas High graduate, placed eighth in the race in 5:30.64.

Hug High graduate Stephanie Tietjen won the shot put with a heave of 47-6-1/4 as the Wolf Pack swept three of the top four spots. Galena High graduate Janine Bodo placed fourth at 42-9.

Nicole McRae led a 1-2-4 sweep for Nevada in the 800 meters as she ran 2:10.65 to edge teammate Kali Baker (2:11.04). Julie Hinton, another Galena graduate, placed fourth in the race.

In the men’s competition, Carson City resident and Sacramento State senior Robert Linkl placed eighth in the weight throw with a personal record distance of 56-11-1/4.
