Youth encouraged to participate in video project
November 5, 2007
The Dialogue Group to End Childhood Hunger and Homelessness in Carson City welcomes youth to an informational meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday for a video contest documenting homelessness in our community – through their own eyes.
“The group wants to raise awareness of homelessness in our community and empower our youth through this contest,” said Alan Dorway, who is with the dialogue group.
“There may be many youth out there who may be interested in video and video production. And they can work in teams of two or three. We will have Chris Bayer talk with them at the meeting and give them information on how to make a video story board – the basics of making a video.”
The meeting will outline the process of making a short film, highlighting resources for the project and take sign-ups.
Darla Bayer from Access Carson City will help edit the videos.
“We know it’s coming up to Christmas and people are busy, but also, Dec. 21 a national vigil for homelessness is held and that’s when we’ll show the videos. We need to recognize homelessness,” Dorway said.

“We will give cash prizes for first, second and third-place videos. We’ll offer a free meal at 5:30 p.m. at the Fellowship Hall at First Presbyterian Church, then show the videos at 6 p.m. Dec. 21.”
Dorway said the videos turned in for the contest will be aired on Access Carson City, with each student receiving production credit and recognition for their efforts.
“Homelessness is important to recognize at any time,” said Micheal Hurlbert, youth pastor of First Christian Church. Hurlbert said a couple of his youth have shown interest in participating.
“The dialogue group is great, especially in getting kids involved to bring awareness to homelessness. Even I’m interested in it.”
Dialogue Group to End Childhood Hunger and Homelessness is partnering with Community Council on Youth for this project.
