Lois Rabe Sarmon
Lois Rabe Sarmon, a lifelong resident of Carson Valley and a descendent of early settlers of Carson Valley, died November 13, 2007 at Renown Hospital in Reno, at the age of 86. She was born on Oct. 22, 1921 in the house that her grandparents, Chris and Sofia Rabe had built on Mottsville Lane.
Her Farther and Mother, William and Elizabeth Rabe continued with the racing operations in Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe. Lois attended Douglas County High and was on the Girl’s Basketball Team. She graduated in 1938. She continued her education at the University of Nevada became a member of the Tri Delta sorority, and graduated in 1942.
During the World war II she worked in Oakland, California at the Army Supply Depot. On February 1, 1945 she married Edwin Sarman, who had also graduated from Douglas county School and served in World war II as a radio operator in the Army Air Corp. They were married in St. Gall’s Church. After Will and Elizabeth Rabe died, Lois and Edwin ran the ranch that put up hay in the summer for their cow herd of 150 head.
They raised 7 children; Elizabeth (Gary) Woodbury, Elko, Mary (John) Stephans, Reno, Paul (Cynthia) Sarmon, Elko, and Mike (Melinda) Sarmon, Gardnerville. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Lois was a charter member of the Carson Valley Literary Club, St Gall’s Altar Society, Cowbelles, and Farm Bureau. She enjoyed music and Broadway productions, home cooking and gardening.
A funeral mass will be held on Nov 19, 2007 at St Gall’s Catholic Church at 10:00 am, with visitation and personal prayers available at 9:00 am.
