Minden’s Matt Buyten makes top jump at Moto X World Championships

Matt Buyten, of Minden, won the Step Up final at Qualcomm Stadium Sunday at the Moto X World Championships.

Buyten, who has also lived in Carson City, along with Minden’s Adam Jones, Carson City’s Mike Mason and Sparks’ Drake McElroy, who comes from Fernley, all competed in this weekend’s event. The event was held on Saturday and Sunday at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium.

Buyten’s winning jump was 35 feet, 2-feet higher than second-place Ricky Carmichael, of Havana, Fla.

Jones competed in best trick and freestyle, Mason in freestyle and speed and style and McElroy competed in SuperMoto. All four riders have medaled in the X Games and Buyten has won numerous medals and is a multiple gold medal winner in the X Games in the step up.

Nate Adams of Glendale, Ariz. was the overall winner.
