Nevada Legislature: Republicans push bill calling for equal pay
Lawmakers will review a Republican-backed bill seeking to reduce Nevada’s wage gap between men and women.
The Senate Committee on Judiciary will hold a hearing on Republican-sponsored SB 167 on Monday.
Senate Majority leader Michael Roberson is sponsoring the bill and said the proposal will empower the state’s equal rights commission to levy fines and strengthen protections against discriminatory employment practices.
The bill includes provisions allowing for up to two years of back pay and prohibits employers from punishing workers who ask about wages.
Senate Democrats held a rally in Carson City last week to introduce similar legislation to promote equal pay for men and women. Sen. Pat Spearman introduced SB 190 on Tuesday and said it adds tougher penalties for discriminatory employers.
That bill isn’t scheduled for a hearing.
