Danny Ray Horn
Dan passed away in Reno NV on June 23, 2015 after a long illness. Few people are lucky enough to arrange their final days, but in keeping with his usual strength, Dan was able to do just that. He held on until most of his family could be with him, and with the support of the great staff of Renown, he was able to have a great day of storytelling, final thoughts, and expressions of love before his end came. Dan was born in Weatherford Texas on March 24 1939 to Tracy and Mattie Fain Horn. The family moved to Fallon Nevada in 1940. Dan was a 1957 Graduate of Churchill County High School. He married Leila Rae Cameron in 1960 and they moved to Gabbs Nevada in 1967 where they raised their family. Dan spent many years as a heavy equipment mechanic working in the mining and construction industries throughout Nevada. In his later years, he worked as a security guard at various mines. Dan is survived by his wife, Leila Rae of Sparks Nevada and their children and grandchildren: son Tim (Sharon) Horn of Elko Nevada and their children Randi (Pat) Bluemel and Casey (Kyler) Doble; daughter Denise (Ken) Taylor of Lewiston Idaho and their children Britni (Lee) Hagle, Kenny (Jennifer) Taylor and Andrea (Matt) Andrews; daughter Leslie (David) Banks of Seattle Washington and her children Jared (Sarah) Bunch, Kirstin Bunch (Sterling Ward), Chelsea (Adam) Anderson and Cierra Carter (JD Brown); and daughter Meloney Horn of Sicklerville New Jersey and her children Joseph (BreeAnn) Reed, Jennifer Reed and Ashley Reed. Dan had 23 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. He is also survived by his sisters Linda Martin, Faye Oakes and Kaye Robinson, and his sister in law Natasha Horn and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jerry. Dan served his community in many ways. He was a Volunteer Firefighter, EMT and EMS instructor and served a term as President of the Nevada State Firemen’s Association. He was a member of the Gabbs Valley Search and Rescue, a Hunter Safety instructor, and was also involved in youth sports. He was a fierce competitor in mining events throughout Nevada in Single Jack Drilling, and was a crowd favorite for his entertaining style. Dan was an avid fisherman and hunter and many of his (and his friends’) kids remember tucking a hand in his back pocket for a pull up the mountain. Dan had a great sense of humor and loved to entertain. A good practical joke would always light him up. Hunting camp with family and friends was the best time, and singing around the campfire was always the highlight of the day. Dan was loved and respected by so many people, and his specific request was for us to have a big Irish Wake on his behalf. Please join us at the Elks Lodge in Fallon on Saturday June 27th at 4:00pm for pot luck and an evening of dancing and sharing memories of Dan. In keeping with his wishes, no flowers please. Arrangements were entrusted to O’Brien-Rogers & Crosby Funeral Home, Reno.
