JOHN ALLEN GREGORY

December 11, 1919 – September 25, 2010

Despite the dedicated efforts of Dr. Gary Dankworth and the caring medical professionals – both in the Medical Ward and ICU – at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, John passed away on Saturday, Sept. 25.

He was born in Elk River, Idaho, on Dec. 11, 1919 to William Lloyd and Alvina Oriez Davis. He grew up in Montana and, following graduation from high school, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and helped to construct the “Going to the Sun Highway” in Glacier National Park. In January of 1941 he left Montana for a Civil Service job at the Department of State in Washington, D.C .

John was a member of the Armed Services during World War II, having served from November, 1942 to December 1945 as a Tech Sgt., U.S. Army attached to the Office of Strategic Services which later became the Central Intelligence Agency. He was stationed in Bethesda, Md., and Kunming, China.

He married Sara Marjorie Hardin in Washington, D.C., on April 5, 1942. When the war was over, he returned to his position at the State Department, while at the same time, because of the GI Bill, he was able to get his masters degree In accounting. After 40 years in the federal government, he retired in 1980 as an accountant at the Federal Home Loan Bank Board in Washington, D.C. He and Sara moved to Carson City in 1980.

John was a quiet and gentle man and a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Sara; his daughter, Gayle Sherman; his grandson, Ian Sherman, and his great-grandson, 9-month-old Hank. He is also survived by his constant companion, his beloved poodle, Kodi. We miss him so very much.

At his request, there will not be a memorial service and interment will be private.

Should anyone care to make a memorial donation, it may be sent to Carson City Natives and Newcomers Nursing Scholarship Fund at PO Box 2603, Carson City, NV 89702 or to Meals on Wheels at the Carson City Senior Center. 911 Beverly DR, Carson City, NV, 89706.
