Boys’ State applications being accepted

High school juniors throughout Nevada are invited to apply for the American Legion’s Boys’ State program.

This summer leadership program allows 150 of the state’s top high school boys to form a mock legislature, judiciary and executive branch as delegates from areas of Nevada.

Students in public, private and home schools are encouraged to apply by visiting http://www.nevadaboysstate.org.

There is a similar program for young women run by the American Legion Auxiliary called Nevada Girls’ State.

Lecture on first ladies gowns on Tuesday

Nevada State Museum curator of textiles Jan Loverin will give a presentation on the history of Nevada’s First Lady gowns at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Nevada State Museum. Dawn Gibbons’ inaugural gown by Armani will be on display. Regular admission applies. This presentation is free for members. Call 687-4810 ext. 239.

Library Board to meet

The Carson City Library Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. today in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, 851 E. William St.

Scheduled for possible action is the upcoming fiscal year budget. Development of a master plan, hearing a presentation about ramping up library construction and information from a bonding workshop are discussion topics.

Shade Tree Council meets today

The Carson City Shade Tree Council will meet at 5:30 p.m. today at the Capitol Conference Room at City Hall, 201 N. Carson St.

Subjects include a possible recommendation to the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors about landscaping development standards, and possible action about creating an award recognizing efforts to preserve and protect trees.

Potter’s House to show ’16 to Life’

The Potter’s House will show “16 to Life,” at 7 p.m. Saturday at 264 W. Winnie Lane. The public is welcome to the free movie. There will be free popcorn and refreshments. Call 721-5584.

Kiwanis to hold benefit luau Saturday

The Carson City Kiwanis Club will hold its 20th annual luau at 6 – 11 p.m. Saturday at the Carson Nugget Convention Center, 507 N. Carson St. This year’s theme is “Louie” Luau. The traditional Hawaiian evening includes a Polynesian buffet, silent auction, complimentary mai tai, door prizes, drawings and more. Local band Fast Forward will provide entertainment and there will be a mystery guest master of ceremonies.

All proceeds from the luau will benefit community service projects in the Carson City area such as Meals on Wheels, Safe Grad Night, FISH, the Carson River Cleanup, Easter egg hunt, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, Back to School shopping spree for children in need, and the Carson City Kiwanis Scholarship programs.
