Every person who joins the National Arbor Day Foundation during August will receive 10 free Colorado blue spruce trees.

The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting between Oct. 15 and Dec. 10 with enclosed planting instructions. They are guaranteed to grow or will be replaced free of charge.

To receive the trees send a $10 membership contribution to Ten Blue Spruces, National Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Avenue, Nebraska City, NE 68410 or visit http://www.arborday.org by Aug. 31.

Carson City

Governor’s medallion to benefit cancer center

The Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Auxiliary will raffle a medallion honoring Gov. Kenny Guinn. First lady Dema Guinn donated the limited edition medallion, only 10 of which were produced, to the Auxiliary in order to help raise money to benefit the new Carson Tahoe Cancer Center.

Raffle tickets are $5 for one ticket or $20 for five and may be purchased at the Auxiliary gift shop at the hospital, 1600 Medical Parkway. The drawing will be Oct. 31 at the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center. Call 445-5142.

‘Hot August Jazz’ at Comma Courtyard

The Mile High Jazz Band featuring vocalist Sheryl Adams will play at the Comma Courtyard from 8-10 p.m. Tuesday at 312 S. Carson St. Admission is $5 and $4 for members of the Mile High Jazz Band Association, and free for those aged 18 and under.

Swing dance lessons will be from 6-7:30 p.m. and are $5 additional. Call 883-2662.

‘H.F. Dangberg: Nevada Pioneer’ at Railroad Museum

The Nevada State Railroad Museum will host Michael Fischer as he presents the Chautauqua performance of H.F. Dangberg: Nevada Pioneer. This event is free and begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday on the lawn of Gibson Park, just north of the museum’s main building, 2180 S. Carson St. Call 687-6953.

Lecture on Carson Mint superintendent to be Wednesday

The Carson City Historical Society presents “Reflections of Carson City” with a lecture by Rusty Goe, author of “The Mint on Carson Street.” He will lecture on the life of James Crawford, superintended of the Carson City Mint. This lecture will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Carson City Library and is free and open to the public. Call 887-2244.

Lyon County joint meeting to be held

There will be a joint meeting of the Lyon County Board of Commissioners and the Lyon County Regional Transportation Commission at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the McAtee Building, 2475 Ft. Churchill Road in Silver Springs. Persons who wish to attend the meeting and require special assistance are requested to notify the office in writing at 27 S. Douglas County

Watercolor classes at senior center

Watercolor classes will be from 9 a.m.-noon starting Wednesday at the Douglas County Senior Center.

Washoe County

Learn all about Davis Creek on ranger-guided hike

Participants in a ranger-led hike can learn all about Davis Creek, from the prehistoric plants to the area’s best fishing holes at 7 p.m. Thursday as part of Washoe County’s “Discover Your Parklands” guided hiking series.
