Editorial: multitrack schools

The failures of multitrack scheduling in Douglas County seem clear.

Parents say it disrupts their families. Teachers say it disrupts their classroom teaching. Test scores have fallen.

The successes, we suppose, can be measured in terms of buildings and, perhaps, tax dollars. When Douglas County enrollment was expanding rapidly, it bought some time. Now that enrollment is down, the time has arrived.

The Douglas County School District should return to a schedule that makes sense for its students and their families, which sounds to us like a nine-month traditional calendar.

And for Carson City residents still thinking it’s anything but a temporary fix, listen to your neighbors to the south.
