Letter: Social Security fund

by L Gostin

For the past few weeks I’ve watched our lawmakers, on both sides of the aisle, unashamedly declare that they will NOT raid the Social Security Fund.

After years of declaring that Social Security was going broke, Congress admits that for the past 30 years it has been using SS surplus funds to pay for their pet projects. I heard one commentator say that a total of $1.2 trillion has been stolen from SS. It’s mind boggling to think that Congressmen have been engaging in a practice that would land a normal citizen in jail for embezzlement. But they say that the money wasn’t stolen, IOUs in the guise of Treasury Bonds were put into the fund. If that’s the case, why haven’t the bonds been cashed in to keep SS solvent?

Every time I watch one of these holier than thou blowhards state that they’re going to save Social Security, I want to throw up. They actually believe that they deserve a pat on the back (or your vote) for NOT stealing from the fund. I guess that’s just politics.
