Opportunities to spruce up downtown Carson City exist

The closure of the Horseshoe Club is bad news for its employees, but may be good news if a buyer either renovates the exterior (seriously, T1-11 siding on our most visible street?), and it remains a casino or redevelops the property into some higher use.

The renovation of the Citibank building, a reopened Ormsby House, and a renovated Jack’s Bar (a gigantic black mark right across from the Legislature — at this point it looks like we’ll all die of old age before this important building is saved) would go a long way toward making downtown more presentable.

I’m also hoping the state will finally tear down the Kincaid building, do something with the old Boys & Girls Clubs property between Stewart and Roop (like give it to the city or sell it so it can generate city tax revenue), and do something — anything — with the old National Guard property on South Carson Street.

The city seems serious about tackling the visual corridors, but getting a little help from some private owners and the state could make a big difference.

Maybe our new Assembly person will successfully fight for state money to solve some of the state-owned blight as well as being the champion Western Nevada College deserves.
